What exactly is the Deva Cut?

The Deva cutting technique is a revolutionary method for cutting curly hair whereas most traditional hair cutting techniques were created for straight hair. The advantage of Deva Cuts is that it's customized to work with your unique curl pattern. This curl exclusive cut requires special training to learn the technique. The hair is cut dry, simply because we wear our hair dry not wet. Curly hair and its spring factor can be misinterpreted while wet- that's why we cut the hair in its natural form, while dry, curl by curl. This unique innovation allows the stylist to sculpt each client's hair, according to their individual curl, look, and style because no two curls are alike.

Can I get a Deva Cut?

Do I need to do anything to my hair to prepare for a Deva cut?

Yes! Definitely void sulfate products for at least the week before your appointment. If you have booked your appointment less than 3 days before your appointment wash only with conditioner. On the day of your appointment you need to arrive with your hair with only light product (enough to show curl pattern only) and dried naturally (air dry). Do not pin it up or pull it back. This prevents any manipulation to your curls which can drastically affect the efficiency of the Deva Cut. Your Deva architect needs to see your curls in their natural state. NOTE: If you do NOT arrive with your hair properly prepared to receive the Deva Cut you will have to be rescheduled.

What is the Pintura?

Deva's revolutionary, patented, award-winning hair painting technique, both unique and innovative, was designed to replace conventional highlighting. Pintura is free-form hair painting that is individualized for your unique style; curl pattern and hair type creating the perfect harmony and balance between tone and shape, light and shadow. This technique produces totally individualized results and is the preferred technique for curly hair. How the curl lays and fits with the rest of your hair is analyzed so the highlighting will show to its best advantage.

What is a Certified Pintura Colorist?

A Certified Pintura Colorist is trained by creators of the Pintura patented technique at the Devachan Salon in NYC. This hands-on session offers stylists their exclusive hair painting technique that involves strategic placement of color to emphasize curls that most beautifully reflect light. During this interactive session, attendees learn to assess and apply color based on curl type, hair color and desired aesthetic. Participants are taught how to apply color using the patented Deva Comb-brush and the Deva 3-step for cleansing, hydration and styling. This course concludes with a complete DevaCurl product portfolio discussion. Upon completion, stylists receive a personalized Deva Inspired Highlighting Stylist Diploma.

Why is Pintura beneficial over foils for Curlies?

Foiling creates "baking" when closing hair inside the pockets thus over processing fragile curly hair. Pintura is painting on each curl and processes the color at room temperature to avoid heat damage and encourage even processing. Since Pintura is painted by hand individually it gives a more natural look eliminating the “zebra look” that foils can sometime leave behind in their wake.

Can Pintura be performed on straight hair?

Yes! Pintura is a color technique for all hair- curly or straight. Though it was developed specifically for curly hair it can be performed on all hair types.

Why is Pintura good for all hair types?

Foiling is applied horizontal when our hair grows vertically. Pintura is painted on to specific curls/strands (in a vertical motion) and the color goes from thinner at the scalp to thicker on the ends to show the dimension and have less root grow out.

What is the difference between the Deva certifications?

There are two different Deva certifications based off of which training class the stylist attended.

A Certified Deva Inspired Stylist has successfully completed the DevaCurl Academy’s 2-Day Cutting Curl Lab known as Curlaboration. Newly trained stylists leave the DevaCurl Academy having perfected the patented Deva Cut.The stylist’s instruction includes theory-based education and hands-on technical work with volunteer curly models and mannequins.

A Certified Deva Inspired Advanced Stylists has successfully completed the DevaCurl Academy’s Intense 3-Day Cutting Curl Lab and the Pintura Highlighting Lab held in NYC at the prestigious Devachan Salon. The class is instructed hands on by the most elite Deva professionals giving the stylist a more intimate and indepth education on perfecting the patented Deva Cut and the industry award-winning Pintura coloring technique.
